Status: Unchanged for 2019
Summary: The Grand Caravan’s impressive interior space,
decent performance and attractive base price (the least expen-sive
of all minivans) makes it a popular choice with budget-minded
buyers.
The interior comes with easy-to-read gauges and soft-touch
dashboard and door-panel surfaces that belie the mini-van’s
comfortable price.
The 283-horsepower “Pentastar” V-6 is mated to a six-speed
automatic transmission and easily runs with the herd
for fuel economy.
Inside, you’ll find the usual dozen or so cup holders plus a
variety of small-item bins and pockets (including dual glove
boxes) that speak to the vehicle’s utility.
The standard third-row split-folding bench seat can be
optionally power folded to create a flat load floor.
The second-row Stow ’n Go feature (standard on all but
the base model) comes with a one-touch-down function and
provides out-of-sight storage bins when the second-row seats
are left in their upright positions.
However, the least expensive GC includes most of the basic
features and safety systems you would expect.
At the opposite end, the GT has a tauter suspension along
with tri-zone A/C and premium leather upholstery.

Summary: The second-generation
Compass, which
replaced both the original model
as well as the Patriot, was a
mid-2017 arrival.
Manufactured in Mexico,
India, Brazil and China, it is sold
in more than 100 countries
worldwide.
Although overall styling
(especially the rear-most roof
pillar) is unique, the grille has a
decidedly Jeep Grand Cherokee
look to it.
The sole engine is a
180-horsepower “Tigershark”
four-cylinder that’s linked to
either a six-speed manual, or
available six- or nine-speed
automatic transmissions.
Four different trim levels are
available: Sport, Latitude, Lim-ited
and Trailhawk.
The latter comes with added
ground clearance, underbody
protection and a dual-range
four-wheel-drive system called
Selec-Terrain that can direct
100 percent of the available
torque to a single wheel.
It also uses a 20:1 crawl ratio
for tackling the real rough stuff.
A less rugged full-time sys-tem
is optional on the rest of
the lineup.
Both 4x4 systems can be
set to Auto, Snow, Sand and
Mud modes, but Selec-Terrain
also gets an additional Rock
setting designed for serious
off-roading.

Summary: The Pacifica is quite simply
one of the best minivans on the market.
It’s built on a weight-saving platform
that’s wrapped in one of the most smartly
tailored shapes in its class. Matching the
tasteful exterior is a comfortable interior
with room for up to eight people.
Chrysler’s available Stow ’n Go (the
second- and third-row seats fold beneath
the floor) turns the Pacifica into a movable
storage locker.
Stow ’n Go isn’t available in the new
Base Pacifica L model that gets the Stow n’
Place roof rack instead. It’s also not found
in the Hybrid, since that space is reserved
for lithium-ion battery storage.
Regardless of model, a range of active
safety tech is standard equipment.
A peppy V-6 is also standard and is con-nected
to a nine-speed automatic transmis-sion
on gas-only Pacificas. The heavier (by
600 pounds) plug-in Hybrid model uses
an electric motor plus the same V-6 that’s
connected to a continuously-variable trans-mission
(CVT).
The Hybrid can function in electric-only
mode for up to 33 miles and at speeds up
to 120 mph. A combined city/highway fuel
economy equivalent of 84 mpg in electric
mode is another reason for acquiring the
Hybrid, although the upcharge is $12,000.
