One of the best things about SummerSounds is the variety
of the music brought to the stage. Even this year, the lineup
spans numerous genres. A number of cover bands for classic
musical acts, such as The Eagles and Chicago, are peppered
in. The Eagles tribute band brought in a crowd of 8,000
concert-goers to open this year’s series, but classic rock is far
from the only type of music to be represented.
James said The Suffers, the R&B/Soul group that took the
stage on July 12, is a particularly popular choice. Bluegrass
and soul are frequent choices, but this summer’s calendar includes
jazz, folk, pop and roots rock. There is even a Celtric
rock band, Seven Nations, whose first appearance in Greensburg
was in 2003.
Many of the artists are repeat performers and favorites of
the SummerSounds crowd, making the community an integral
part of these shows.
The board of SummerSounds created a nonprofit, Friends
of SummerSounds, in 2017, to make sure that the series
keeps going after its founders are no longer involved. James
said he hopes to pass the mantle on to the next generation.
“The main goal for the future is to make the series sustainable,”
he said.
With a small army of passionate volunteers and the continuing
support of the City of Greensburg, future success is
a safe bet. The number of attendees packing St. Clair Park
every summer Friday night is only growing. After 20 years,
SummerSounds has grown from the dream of four residents
over a drink into a can’t-miss tradition for the region’s music
lovers.
Check out the SummerSounds free concert series every
Friday night at St. Clair Park in downtown Greensburg. There
is 30 minutes of pre-show music from 6:15 to 6:45 p.m., and
the main acts start performing at 7.
A range of dining options in the surrounding downtown
area make for a perfect date night or family outing, as well.
Make sure to bring your blankets, lawn chairs and snacks to
enjoy the music.
