Richards cites the Great Allegheny Passage from Pittsburgh to Washington as a shining example of re-turn on investment and the creation of new business-es in trail towns specifically because of the influx of cyclists, including bike shops, restaurants, bed and breakfasts and tour companies. “I think in the case of the Westmoreland Heritage Trail, there is going to be a ripple effect into the community,” he said. “Trafford is all gung-ho to extend the trail even further into downtown Trafford and recently submitted a grant application to the National Park Service to help them with that. That’s something the community wouldn’t have done three years ago, but now that the trail is becoming more real, it’s easier to envision how to extend it so it comes more deeply into the community. “I look at Trafford and Export in particular as great potential trail towns because they have that legacy of having been developed as patch towns where the downtown is fairly dense and pedestrian friendly. Those are environments that seem to be attracting younger people who want to be able to walk more and not be so car-dependent. If the street-life scene can get a little more snazzy, then those communities could do quite well in terms of their renaissance.” The third phase of construction began in March. By July, they were already paving portions of the stretch from B-Y Park in Trafford to Roberts Parcel in Murrysville with limestone dust. Murrysville will also be home to a new trailhead with restrooms, 32 park-ing spaces and a visitors center that not only will provide access to the trail but also to Duff Park. The trailhead was slated for completion in September. In January, governor Tom Wolf announced that the county would receive a grant from the federal Trans-portation Alternatives Program for $1 million to build 3.4 miles of trail from Murrysville to Export. That phase is expected to be completed in 2019. That would leave just four miles left between Ex-port and Delmont to make the trail a total of 22 miles. “Then, if we can figure out how to connect from Trafford to the Great Allegheny Passage, that would be another four miles for a total of 26 miles,” Rich-ards said. The Westmoreland Heritage Trail chapter meets monthly, and the public is encouraged to attend.
