October 7 & 8 Beer Arena — Greensburg Applefest grows, year after year On “the best three days of the year” — the first full weekend in October — thousands of visitors descend on the small town of Franklin for the annual Applefest celebration. Oct. 6-8 marks the 35th anniversary of the festival, and the Franklin Area Chamber of Commerce has put together a lineup of returning favorite activities with new entertainment. Applefest’s main draw is the 300-plus arts and crafts vendors, but there is so much more to do and see. It’s no wonder so many former Franklinites use Applefest weekend as an unofficial homecoming celebration. Many of the events, such as the 5K Race for Any Pace, the Antique & Classic Car Cruise, apple-pie-eating contest and apple pancake breakfast, have become must-attend events each year. There is also a full lineup of live music and children’s entertainment and more than 75 food vendors. The first seeds of Applefest were planted when a newcomer to the area, Mrs. Lee Chapman, visited the Chamber office expressing “enchantment” with the area. Coming from an arid region of South Africa, she was especially impressed with the abundance of red apples growing in Franklin. She thought they would make a fabulous basis for an event that could help improve spirits and instill some old-fashioned community pride in the residents who had been hard hit by an economic downturn. Combining Mrs. Chapman’s suggestion with the area’s historical link to fabled folk hero Johnny Appleseed, the idea for Applefest was born. The Franklin Area Chamber would like to thank everyone who has helped build Applefest over the years. Without the generosity of our sponsors, the tireless efforts of the hundreds of volunteers, the cooperation of local businesses and residents and the support of the City of Franklin and Venango County, Applefest never could have become what it is today. For a full schedule of Applefest activities, check out franklinapplefest.com. If you need help planning a visit to Franklin, contact the Chamber at 814-432-5823 or go online to franklinareachamber.org.
