TRIB TOTAL MEDIA ARCHIVES adno=6483589 PAID ADVERTISEMENT YOUNGWOOD For 115 years, the borough of Youngwood has been a quiet, livable community just south of Greensburg. Youngwood’s roots go back to the settlement established in 1899 by John Y. Woods, whose mother’s maiden name was Young, thus leading to the name Youngwood. A year later, the old Pennsylvania Railroad built a large railyard on its southwest branch that became the borough’s main industry. That history lives on in the name of the borough’s main cross-street, Depot Street, which crossed Fourth and Third streets in the middle of the business district. The former railroad station now serves as a museum in the town. Youngwood’s other historic claim to fame is Pro Football Hall-of-Famer George Blanda, the first 2,000-point scorer in NFL history as a quarterback and kicker. U.S. Route 119 bears Blanda’s name through the quaint town of roughly 3,000 people. Along with the many local businesses along the main roads in the heart of the borough,Youngwood also is home to the main campus of Westmoreland County Community College.
