Incorporated in 1799 as the area around the Westmoreland County Courthouse—which in its present building is Greensburg’s most recognizable with its tall, golden dome—Greensburg experienced a population boom around 1900 that made it the business hub it is today. As home to theWestmoreland Museum of Art, the University of Pittsburgh’s Greensburg campus and Seton Hill University, as well as Seton Hill’s Performance Arts Center that opened in 2009, the city has many outlets for education and culture. Perhaps most recognizable is the Palace Theater, which hosts everything from musical theater to national rock, pop and country acts in the heart of the city. While downtown Greensburg no longer hosts the large department stores it once did—most of those have relocated toWestmoreland Mall just outside the city limits—it still has a wide variety of local shops and restaurants. Most of the action downtown is conveniently located in the easily walkable business district along Pittsburgh and Otterman streets, intersected at the city’s center by Main Street. Nightlife in the city also has increased, a result of the growth of the local colleges and the emergence of more trendy hot spots in recent years, but downtown Greensburg has remained a family-friendly destination while keeping up with current trends. With so much to offer and easy access from nearby communities along Route 30, Greensburg continues to evolve and thrive as the hub of activity inWestmoreland County.
