SMALL-TOWN CELEBRATION SUBMITTED PHOTOS SLICKVILLE CELEBRATES 100 YEARS Small town still has community feel, even after a century of change 42 | Destination Westmoreland 2017 The half-square-mile piece of land in Salem Township, known as Slickville might be tiny, but its residents have big plans to celebrate the town’s upcoming 100th anniversary. “I guess I never really thought about its true size like that,” said Lance Remic, a lifelong resident and one of three co-chairs of the town’s Centennial Celebration. “There really are just two stop signs in town.” Named for mine owner Donald Slick of the Cambria Steel Company, Slickville was founded in 1917 and included amenities not found in older mining towns, including a “downtown” area that was shared between the town of Jamison and nearby Patton. Since the closing of the five Slickville mines by 1942, the town has benefitted economically from its proximity to other cities in the area, including Greensburg, Jeannette and Latrobe.
