batch a month, a batch a year,” Meyer said. “People can talk to us for hours if they need help under-standing what’s going on. If there are questions throughout the process, even something like help reading a hydrometer, people can call us, even on weekends or when we’re not open.” Parr said the nationwide trend toward hoppy, sometimes bitter beers is showing no sign of slowing down. Meyer said he sees the same from local brewers, while he notices a trend toward fruit wines made with locally grown produce in the homemade wines coming from the area. Delmont, which was settled in the early 19th century as New Salem, has been visited by many a traveler since the days of stagecoaches, as evidenced by the Salem Crossroads Historic District. While it now sits near the intersection of U.S. Route 22 and PA 66, the Historic District is home to buildings dating to 1830, including log cabins, Greek Revival and Gothic-style buildings and the old Central Hotel. Of more present-day interest, the annual Delmont Apple ’n Arts Festival is a big annual draw to the borough in early fall with food and live music. In nearby Export, the borough has started its own Music and Food Festival held in late summer, centered around the restored 1939 train caboose permanently parked downtown. The event brings people to the community, which was first established in the late 19th century as a coal shipping port. Since Export’s centennial in 1911, the borough of fewer than 1,000 people has expanded its historical preservation efforts with the conversion of its Centennial Committee into the Export Historical Society, which meets monthly.
