TURNING
THE CORNER
April begins daffodil season,
and it’s my favorite month of the
year.
It can be a tough one, weather-wise,
but being on the precipice
of summer is exhilarating, as
winter seemed to last forever.
The emergence of daffodils
means there’s no turning back.
I’ve got some planted close to
the house that always bloom too
early. They put buds on in late
February, during a thaw, and still
flowered.
The blooms were buried in wet
snow a couple of times, leaving
them prostrate on the sidewalk.
They were beautiful nonetheless.
But those are just first blooms.
Part of being an obsessive
daffodil planter means growing
early, mid-season and late-flowering
cultivars.
