HEMPFIELD MUST REPLACE
OFFENSIVE STANDOUTS
by bILL bECKNER JR.
There are nine teams in
WPIAL Class 6A. Hempfield
hopes to avoid being one of
the three that doesn’t make
the playoffs.
“It’s the best of the best.
There isn’t a lot of room for
mistakes,” Spartans coach
Rich Bowen said of the revamped
class, which is down
to just one “power” conference.
“We want to be able to
get that signature win and be
able to followit up withanother
one. We haven’t been able
to do that here for a while.”
Hampered by injuries
and inexperience up front,
Hempfield stumbled to a 1-9
mark last season and failed
to reach the postseason for a
third straight time.
Hempfield played a number
of sophomores last year so,
“We’ll be young two years in
a row,” Bowen said of this
year’s team, which must replace
some key standouts,
program staples for several
years, such as quarterback
Justin Sliwoski, tight end/
linebacker Braden Brose and
dependableanddurable twins
Nick and Isaiah DiAndreth.
As for quarterback, where
the incumbent starter got
unexpected playing time last
season, junior Blake Remaley
