Osteopathic medicine program
at Seton Hill celebrates 10 years
In August 2009, Seton Hill welcomed
its first class of osteopathic
medicine students. These students
were the first to take advantage of a
partnership program with the Lake
Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine
at Seton Hill.
Entering as Seton Hill freshmen,
these students had a seat waiting for
them in the new medical school on
Seton Hill’s Greensburg campus.
In the 10 years since then, LECOM
at Seton Hill has graduated 700
physicians.
The collaboration between
LECOM and Seton Hill has proven
so beneficial that it has been
expanded to include cooperative
degree programs in pharmacy and
dental medicine.
While at Seton Hill, students
heading to medical, dental and
pharmacy school take advantage of
learning with mobile technology in
advanced facilities.
“Reading one page of your textbook
could take hours, especially for
first-and-second-year students,” said
Professor of Biology Jamie Fornsaglio,
Ph.D.
She uses an app called Voicethread
to help students engage more deeply
in the learning experience. Using
Voicethread, she records herself
explaining complicated concepts with
the assistance of a PowerPoint presentation.
Students can access this when they
need it, and can outline and take
notes to make concrete connections
between what they are reading and
what she is saying.
Fornsaglio also created an online
lab manual that takes students
through the protocols for lab exercises
and offers video tutorials on
certain procedures.
Students can access the information
any time on their phone, an iPad
or the MacBook Air laptops that
Seton Hill provides to full-time
students.
“They can watch me doing a lab
procedure while they are doing it,”
Fornsaglio said. “I can be in 24
places at one time with the video. I
believe this enhances student
understanding and interest in their
research — while also improving their
preparedness and confidence in the
lab.”
