Exhibits range from the richly inlaid wood furniture of Damascus to antique religious icons that have served for centuries as windows into the heavenly realm; from the delicate jewelry and metal work of the Middle East to the colorful hand-embroidery of a 19th century Bethlehem dress. Bushy Run Battlefield is the site of a clash between forces led by Col. Henry Bouquet, en route to relieve a besieged Fort Pitt, and several allied Native American nations who ambushed them in hopes of repelling British and colonial advances into the frontier. Highlights of the site include the interpretive exhibit The March to Bushy Run as well as guided and self-guided tours. Enjoy “history with a smile” as costumed docents immerse the visitor in the transportation and daily life of the early 1800s. Completely furnished with period pieces, visitors can tour seven rooms in the inn — the common room, serving kitchen, ladies’ parlor, and four bedrooms. Visitors can also explore three restored outbuildings — a cookhouse, blacksmith shop, and barn. 724-238-4983 compassinn.com Fort Ligonier A jewel of the picturesque town of Ligonier, Fort Ligonier’s history is rooted in the conflict between Great Britain and France as they fought for supremacy in western Pennsylvania during the French and Indian War (1754-1763). Explore the reconstructed fort, tour the permanent exhibit The World Ablaze: An Introduction to the Seven Years’ War, see George Washington’s original saddle pistols and mem-oirs, and view eighteenth-century treasures from archaeological digs. 724-238-9701 fortligonier.org Fulton House The Fulton House in New Derry was built in 1817. Drivers and team-sters on the road to Pittsburgh stopped at this location for wagon repairs and a place to sleep. For nearly 150 years the log building was covered with clapboard and used as a private residence. In 1997 the Derry Area Historical Society rehabilitated the original structure, adding an operating blacksmith shop and two-story log barn to the grounds. Today the Fulton House and its grounds are open for tours on Sundays in the spring, summer, and fall. 724-694-8808 derryhistory.org Greater Monessen Heritage Museum The Monessen Heritage Museum is housed in a four-story brick building that once served as a boarding house for immigrant mill workers.
