They do know that acts in the 1970s included the Lettermen, Chubby Checker, Tammy Wynette, Dr. Hook and Mel Tillis. The Oak Ridge Boys have performed at the Palace more than any other act in the last 20 years, Langer said, and the Beach Boys have also made multiple appearances. Some of the other more unique ap-pearances at the Palace have included Weird Al Yankovic, the Blue Man Group, the theatrical show Stomp, Jack Hanna with his animals and even the Dalai Lama. Although the bulk of the Palace’s patrons come from Westmoreland and surrounding counties, Langer and Baugh-man both have stories of people traveling great distances to reach the theater. “We had one man come from Austria to see Amy Grant,” Baughman said. “He was a doctor and when we asked him why come all this way, he said the concert was on a Saturday, he wasn’t on call that weekend and could fly to the U.S. on a Friday and go home Sunday. This year’s anniversary will bring a number of special programs. For instance, the William Tell Over-ture was on the theater’s opening night program, and the Westmoreland Sym-phony will open its first performance of the season with the piece on Oct. 1. Baughman said they also plan to showcase some vaudeville-inspired acts and offer tours around the time of the anniversary that will include many tales and artifacts from the theater’s history.
