BY DAVE MACKALL 56 | Discover Westmoreland 2016 FROM MY HOMETOWN just outside of Johnstown, our fam-ily would make the tedious, 70-mile trip to Pittsburgh several times a year over a two-lane road snaking through the mountains of the Laurel High-lands before we finally reached what we perceived as civiliza-tion around the Westmoreland County line. I’m fairly certain I’ve said this before: “Where’s the interstate highway?” Back in those days, Westmo-reland County gave country folk a glimpse of city life. Even when there weren’t a lot of restaurants along Route 22 by the time you hit New Alexan-dria, it just seemed as though you were getting closer to the action.
