Find an adaptive sport
Looking for an opportunity to play adaptive sports in the Western
Pennsylvania area? Whether on water, snow, ice or dry land,
there are many options for individuals with a wide variety of
disabilities to take part in both individual and team sports in
the area. Here is a list of some of the offerings.
DYNAMIC PADDLERS
The Pittsburgh-based organization
offers personalized kayak
and canoe instruction as well
as group training for youth and
adults of all abilities from around
Southwestern Pennsylvania.

MIGHTY PENGUINS
SLED HOCKEY
The organization has teams
ranging from novice, which is
open to anyone regardless of
disability and offers a place to
learn the sport of sled hockey,
to junior, adult and senior teams
to allow athletes to grow within
the sport and find increasing
levels of competition. Players
on the senior team can use it
as a springboard to playing the

BASEBALL
Miracle League baseball is
open to children with adults with
physical and mental disabilities.

CURLING CLUB
The Pittsburgh Curling Club is
looking for Pennsylvania residents
with spinal cord injuries
or disorders to learn the sport
of wheelchair curling. They’re
holding their next wheelchair
learn to curl event from noon to
2:30 p.m. May 15.

BLIND HOCKEY
The organization offers the
chance for visually impaired
athletes to play ice hockey
and practices at Center Ice in
Delmont. The majority of the
athletes are under the age of

STEELWHEELERS
The Steelwheelers is not only
your Western Pennsylvania
home for wheelchair rugby, but
also offers wheelchair basketball
and hand cycling. The nonprofit,
founded in 1977, was one of the
first of its kind in the area to
provide programs for physically

THREE RIVERS
ADAPTIVE SPORTS
The Pittsburgh-based organization’s
mission is to “promote
quality of life, education and
to provide quality year-round
sports and recreation opportunities
for people with disabilities,
their families and friends.” They
offer individuals the opportunity
to participate in such sports
as bowling, skiing and cycling.

THREE RIVERS
ROWING
The organization operates
out of Washington’s Landing on
the Allegheny River and gives
athletes 12 and older who have
disabilities the chance to enjoy
rowing. No prior experience is
necessary. Rowing classifications
include PR1 for athletes
with limited trunk control, PR2
for those only able to use their
trunk muscles, and PR3 for
those who are able to use at
least one leg, their trunk and
their arms, and for those with
visual impairments or cognitive
