TAX AIDE
Free tax filing available
for qualifying seniors
If you’re like many adults, the proliferation
of do-it-yourself tax filing software has made
the process of filing returns at least a little less
painful.
It could be even easier, however, if you or
your loved ones qualify to take advantage
of free tax filing for seniors offered through
AARP and several other resources in the Western
Pennsylvania area.
The AARP Foundation’s Tax Aide is now in
its 52nd year of preparing taxes for those with
low and moderate incomes.
There is no age requirement, and you don’t
have to be an AARP member to take advantage
of the free assistance from IRS-certified
volunteers.
In addition to the AARP program, the IRS
also offers the VITA — or Volunteer Income
Tax Assistance — program for those who
generally make $56,000 or less, persons with
disabilities and limited English speaking taxpayers,
as well as the Tax Counseling for the
Elderly, or TCE program offering free tax help
for all taxpayers, particularly those who are 60
years of age and older.
The volunteers are IRS-certified, often
retired, and specialize in questions about pensions
and retirement-related questions that
are unique to seniors.
Many of the TCE programs are operated
through the Tax Aide program.
Many times, your state representatives’ offices
will be able to direct you where to go for
free tax preparation help.
For a full list of IRS program sites, go to
irs.treasury.gov/freetaxprep/.
For the AARP program visit AARP.org and
search for Tax-Aide Site Locator.
