FACING OFF
the festival is exciting.
“This is everyone’s favorite
by far,” said Christine Hupkovich,
executive director
of the Mighty Penguins.
“It’s the most competitive
tournament and to be in
Pittsburgh this year is such
a great experience. Everyone
will be able to play in front
of their friends and family.”
Pittsburgh has 11 teams
for disabled, special-needs
and lower socio-economic
youth and adults, including
the Mighty Penguins, Pittsburgh
Penguins Blind Hockey
Team and the Pittsburgh
Warriors, a team comprising
injured and disabled U.S.
military veterans.

sled hockey team competing
against one another on
their respective club teams.
The U.S. national team is
the defending Paralympic
and world championship
gold medalist.

team players,” Hupkovich
said. “It’s creating their
goals because they see how
they play and they want to
be able to do that themselves.”

run into a number of people
who didn’t know what
disabled hockey was. Now
that’s not so much the case.
People recognize sled hockey
in particular a lot more,
he said, and the tournament
