special needs and the city’s
commitment to respect and
accessibility for all.
There’s an educational
component to the video, as
well. Intervention specialist
Molly Weisel helped design
lesson plans that educators
can use to teach language
arts, math, science and
social studies in addition to
life components such as job
skills and cooking skills.
“For instance, there’s a
lesson on slope,” Weisel
said. “One of the standards
students have to learn is
how to find slope using rise
over run.
“In the video, Bob challenges
Melarie to go up
Canton Avenue, the steepest
road in the city, so that’s the
basis of finding that slope.”
Shumard said everywhere
they went in the city they
found people warm and
welcoming.
“In fact, there’s a part in
the video at Primanti Brothers
where the woman in
the video who works there
starts ad libbing about people
with disabilities and the
Paralympians who’ve come
in there and she looks right
in the camera and says, ‘If
you have a disability you
can do anything you want,’”
Shumard said. “Everyone

was so nice.”
