$Cremation 790
The popularity of cremation is on the rise.
Unfortunately, so is the cost. In order to help combat increasing costs,
the Thomas M. Smith Funeral Home & Crematory Ltd.
installed a state-of- the-art, on-site crematory.
It can be quite costly if an outside facility is used to perform the cremation. By performing this
service onsite, the Thomas M. Smith Funeral Home & Crematory Ltd. is now able to defray this
cost and pass the savings on to you. Most important, your loved one never leaves our care!
Our compassionate and detail oriented service has made us the leader in funeral service within
the community. Now you too can benefit from the experience that the Thomas M. Smith Funeral
Home & Crematory Ltd. has gained over the past 51 years. Our low cost, direct cremation offer is
available when the death occurs within a 20 mile radius of the Thomas M. Smith Funeral Home &
Crematory Ltd. (There will be a small fee for additional mileage, home death, obesity and a county
cremation permit.) There is no need for a middleman; you deal directly with us. We even have a
prepayment program that will freeze the cost and guard against inflation.
The concerns of a family requesting direct cremation are simple - the cremation should be
performed in a timely and dignified manner, under the supervision of a professional funeral
director, and at a fair cost. The Thomas M. Smith Funeral Home & Crematory Ltd. is committed
to satisfying these concerns, and we welcome the opportunity to be of service. Call us if you have
any questions or wish to make arrangements.

What is Green Burial?
.Green (or natural) burial supports the earth’s ecosystem.
• Green burial grounds are naturally wooded with walking trails to allow
gravesite visitation in a peaceful, lightly forested setting.
• Embalming with toxic chemicals is prohibited. Instead, refrigeration or
nontoxic embalming methods are used to preserve the remains from
death until burial.
• Burial vaults are not allowed.
• Caskets and burial shrouds are made of biodegradable materials.
• Grave markers, when used, are made of native stones or wood and are
usually installed flush with the ground surface.
• Natural burial uses little energy and the remains and coffin nourish plant
and tree growth as they decompose.
• Cremated remains can also be buried or scattered at green cemeteries.
Can Families Have Green
Burials In Pittsburgh?
Yes, both D’Alessandro and Smith Funeral Homes honor families’ choices for green
burial. We are fully equipped and experienced to provide everything needed – fully
biodegradable caskets and shrouds, methods to protect and preserve remains without
using toxic chemicals, etc.
There are a few local cemeteries in the area that may offer green burial as an option,
and we work with these cemeteries to accommodate each individual’s request.
An exclusive, all green cemetery has just opened in the Greater Pittsburgh area.
Penn Forest Natural Burial Park (PennForestCemetery.com), is located 13 miles
from downtown Pittsburgh, on Plum Creek, where Penn Hills, Verona and Oakmont
meet near the Allegheny River. We have no connection to Penn Forest (financial or
otherwise), but we acknowledge their efforts as Pennsylvania’s first all green cemetery,
available to people of all faiths.
We have walked the grounds of this beautiful, 30 acre burial park, and it is
impressive. Penn Forest offers both woodland and meadow burials, as well as sections
for cremated remains. Ten acres are set aside as a woodland wildlife nature preserve,
and walking trails will be developed there. If you are interested in a cemetery tour or
buying a grave, call Penn Forest manager Pete McQuillin at 412-265-4606.
