FOR GREAT JUNE DEALS
It’s said that fall is for planting, but June is a
favorite time to add plants to the garden. Nurs-eries
are motivated to sell plants after the rush
of spring planting has faded.
An early-summer exploration of garden
centers always reveals something special,
especially when getting into the back green-houses.
There’s often something unloved growing
there which needs a good home.
It’s so much fun to discover another addition
for the landscape.
Fertilize often
You’ll want to fertilize your containers with
every (or every other) watering.
I’ve been using Grow from Espoma for a
couple of seasons now. It’s an organic liquid
fertilizer that gives the plants everything they
need.
Out with the old
Deadhead spent flowers to keep plants
blooming.
Removing the old flowers prevents the plant
from making seeds, therefore forcing the plant
to put on more blooms.
There’s still time
If the spring planting season passed you by,
it’s not too late. In fact, things such as toma-toes,
peppers and other heat-loving crops will
thrive from June through the fall.
I’m still planting both vegetables. Tomatoes
will be less susceptible to fungal diseases.
Build the planting routine
This is also a time to succession plant things
such as lettuce and other greens.
Sow some seeds every few weeks to keep the
harvest coming.
These zinnias are past their prime.
Deadheading the flowers will force the plant to make more.
