That’s what helps set them apart from other salons. “We want to give our clients a vacation,” he said. “For one or two hours, we want our clients to be able to relax and have an enjoyable experience.” VSI Salons, formerly Vans Salon, in Sewickley is a full service Aveda lifestyle salon, spa and store.They have received 2017 Readers’ Choice Gold Awards for Best Beauty Salon, spa and store and Best Nail Salon.They received the Silver Award for Best Day Spa. VSI Salons has lowered some of their starting prices to welcome their new clientele. “With our new lower prices, you don’t have to spend a lot of money to have a great experience,” he said. The salon takes pride in their staff’s knowledge in Aveda techniques and services.They attend seminars across the country, and sometimes they invite trainers into the salon. “Some members of our staff have 20 years’ experience,” Brian Van Balen said. “Other staff members are graduates of the Aveda Institute, which is a top-tier education system. If there was a master’s degree in cosmetology, that would equal the kind of education they receive at the Aveda Institute.” Brian Van Balen said that when people try them out they can’t wait to rebook. “We’ve seen a lot of customers over the years,” he said. “But what we take a lot of pride in is the number of clients who come in and enjoy their entire experience so much that they come back again and again.” VSI Salons was started by Brian Van Balen and his sister, Diane Van Balen, in 1994. “My sister was always interested in the arts. Out of high school, she worked for several major salon chains. Eventually, she wanted to open her own salon and spa and asked me to get involved with our one hundred years of family business experience.” Brian Van Balen said that it is easy to see how much the salon has grown since they started 23 years ago in the heart of Sewickley Village. “The salon was originally started in a 500-square-foot part of our building,” he said. “Now we occupy most of the building which is about 3,000 square feet.” As a family-oriented business, they love to give back to the community. Brian Van Balen said that throughout the years they have given thousands of dollars in donations back to the community. One of their major activities is visiting Children’s Hospital once a month to offer hair and nail services to patients there.
