This year’s Readers’ Choice Silver Award winner for Best Physical Therapy, ESSMC provides a wide array of services. While rehabilitation is their No. 1 task, you don’t have to wait until you’re injured for ESSMC to be able to help. One of their most advanced technologies, their two AlterG Treadmills, were developed by NASA for training astronauts for space walks. By allowing people to walk or run at as little as 20 percent of their body weight, the AlterG reduces wear on joints, removes the risk of falls and allows for a full range of motion. The AlterG is a great rehabilitative tool for people who have had knee adno=6453902 injuries, hip replacement or other procedures, but it also functions as a training tool. “When I started out running in my teens, I thought the more miles the better. Now, I understand preserving the body is just as important, and that’s what the AlterG allows me to do,” said AmandaWebb, 37, a distance runner who first used AlterG after being injured. She continues to train using it, and she has finished multiple Boston Marathons and is currently training for a 100-mile race in Ohio. “What I’ve seen with AlterG is I’ve gotten a little speedier. It allows you to work cardio and your feet to turn over faster. I run at 78 percent of my body weight, and I can mess with the incline and speed. It feels like running, but it also feels a bit like floating. You can think about what your running is like and make purposeful strides.” Though physical therapy often leads people to think about orthopedic rehab—hips, knees, ankles, etc.—ESSMC has staff to handle all sorts of ailments, including head injuries. “We do concussion rehab and vestibular therapy, which helps people with concussions or other things that cause dizziness or balance issues like vertigo,” ESSMC therapist Marielle Bonaroti said. “It’s a combination of treatment for the inner ear, manual procedures, visual techniques.…It’s different from just treating a shoulder or neck injury, and we have the ability to treat a wide set of patients that, if we didn’t offer that, we wouldn’t be able to.” With so much to offer and six locations throughout Pittsburgh’s eastern suburbs, ESSMC is the ideal destination for anyone on the road to recovery, and they thank the voters who once again helped make them a Readers’ Choice awardee.
