PLANTS THAT I LOVE
CONTINUED FROM · PAGE 6
I love swooping in and looking at a plant sans
flowers, examining the tag and knowing what it will
become next summer.
Without the blooms, it’s a tough sell at the nurs-ery
for “normal” people, so the price will be rock
bottom.
Over the years, I’ve added many of the variety
along with other lilies to the garden this way.
There also still might be some lily bulbs laying
around the garden center that could be planted
now. They also will be on sale.
I know it’s a long time to wait for the flowers, but
it’s part of thinking ahead in the garden. When it
blooms, just tell all your gardening friends what you
paid for it. They will be green with envy.
If the bulbs can’t be found locally, then they can
be ordered in the fall and planted like daffodils
or tulips. They will happily overwinter and put
on their show next season. The bulbs also can be
ordered in the spring and planted early for similar
results.
Mine are grown in an enclosed vegetable garden
to keep them safe from the deer. If planted in an un-protected
spot around deer country, they will need
to be sprayed with Bobbex deer repellent, as the
buds are candy to the four-legged marauders.
‘Stargazer’ is a spectacular lily persisting for de-cades
with beautiful aromatic flowers that deserve a
place in every garden.
