JULY 2018 • Vo l . 3 , I s s u e 7 | 9
Less is more
Keep flowers blooming strong by deadheading. Removing spent
blossoms will encourage more blooms.
Make your bed
Now is also a great time to refresh mulch where needed.
Container maintenance
Fertilize containers with an organic liquid fertilizer, such as Grow
from Espoma. They should be fertilized at least every other watering
during the long days of summer.
Keep it natural
When dealing with pests or diseases, be sure to identify the prob-lem
and deal with it organically for a healthy landscape. There’s a
natural control for just about any problem in the garden. Remember,
99 percent of the insects in the garden are either beneficial or benign.
Loosening up
The CobraHead weeder is great for loosening soil at the base of
plants to allow fertilizer and water to get where it needs to go.
Morning drink
Water in the morning at the base of plants when needed and soak
the roots. Enjoy the summer garden in its prime. You’ve worked hard
all season, now it’s time to reap the benefits.
Sit down and watch the butterflies, birds and other wildlife thriv-ing
in the landscape. Take lots of pictures, too, so you can remember
how lush the July garden is.
Talk gardening on Facebook
As the Everybody Gardens Seed of the Month Club
continues to grow, we’re adding a new exclusive
group to Facebook.
It’s a place where all of us can talk gardening and
compare notes.
Just go to facebook.com/EverybodyGardens,
scroll down until you see the area for groups and
the Everybody Gardens Seed of the Month Club.
There’s a button there to join. Once you click it,
an administrator will get you set up and approved.
Then you’ll be able to post.
Right now, there’s a poll I’ve posted, which asks,
“When is your first planting of the season?” I’d love
to know.
I hope you’ll sign up so we can continue the
gardening conversation.
Swiss chard is a great crop to plant right now.
It will grow well into early winter.
