Since it opened in October 2015, just north of the Turnpike interchange on Route 8, Churn has been delighting customers with an always-changing menu of homemade ice cream flavors, freshly brewed coffee and assorted baked goods. And after its first full year of business, Churn is the 2017 Readers’ Choice Gold Award winner for both Best Ice Cream and Best Coffee. Churn is always prepared to try something new with their ice cream, which is made on site each day. Owner Kelley Costa said they have produced more than 300 flavors in their eighteen months of business, drawing inspiration from staff ideas, customer suggestions, adno=6451779 TV cooking shows and more. “We change flavors a lot, and I think at first some people were confused by that. They would like a flavor and it wouldn’t be here next time,” Costa said. “I was worried people were going to hate that, but they really seem to like it. We’re all about service, so winning an award voted on by (customers), to me, is better than an industry award.” Black raspberry cheesecake, lime pie, pistachio chip and white chocolate pomegranate are just a few of the creative ice cream flavors Churn has produced, while their selection of coffee drinks is equally diverse with thirty different latte flavors and beans from Iron Star Roasting inWest Mifflin. “We try to get everything that we can locally sourced,” Costa said. “Our ice cream is the biggest part of our business, but in the winter, coffee picks up. I’m definitely more surprised to win the award for coffee than for ice cream, but we do have a lot of regulars who come for coffee.” Another growing part of Churn’s business is their ice cream cakes and pies, which Costa said can be made with any of Churn’s hundreds of ice cream flavors. Whether it’s a sweet treat of savory drink a customer seeks, Churn has something to please everyone. Open daily until 9 p.m. and later on weekends, stop in to see what new flavors Churn has today or visit their Facebook page for a list of the latest offerings.
